Ovarian Cysts
Management of benign Ovarian Cysts
There are many types of ovarian cysts.
We will investigate, monitor and treat (including surgery if needed) a range of ovarian cysts.
- Functional or follicular cyst. Naturally developing cysts as a result of ovulation and normal changes in the ovary.
- Persistent ovarian cysts (simple or complex). Most ovarian cysts are bengin, but can still grow quite large and cause pain and problems.
- Haemorrhagic cyst. Ovulation can sometimes be very traumatic for the ovary and may cause bleeding from the ovary or bleeding into the ovary (haemorrhagic cyst).
- Dermoid cyst. Usually a benign growth on the ovary that contains hair, fat and teeth.
- Ovarian torsion. When an ovarian cyst twists on itself causing severe pain.
- Endometriotic cysts, called endometriomas or 'chocolate cysts', is when endometriosis grows on the ovary.
- Ovarian Cancer affects 1 in 85 women in their lifetime (compared with 1 in 7 women affected with breast cancer).
